Our first Sunday at Chapel here at Sleepy Creek!
We left our meagerly furnished apartment on the edge of Berkeley Springs at 10:00 am. (We have spent our last two nights here after being at the chuck wagon office all day taxing our brains!) it is a good 18 minute drive to camp from here, on narrow curving roads. The scenery is picturesque!
After arriving at chuck wagon, we joined the rest of the group, walking along a winding, narrow, gravel, snow covered path, crossing 2 foot bridges with trickling spring fed streams meandering through the rocks along the way.
The chapel is an outdoor amphitheater with log benches set in a slight semicircle on a hillside in a clearing of the woods, overlooking the Sleepy Creek Valley. The podium which sets on the lowest level is a tree stump.
People in attendance numbered 53 this morning, plus 3 dogs! Chief Daniel led the opening song. Liberty was given for opening which Carl volunteered for. Then we divided up for Sunday school, the campers going off to their spots, the children inside for their class, the men to their circle-up just up the hill behind the chapel. We ladies stayed sitting on the log benches for our class. By the way, it was 31* but mostly sunny. The ground is snow covered. So we were all bundled up in winter clothes plus blankets! After Sunday School a song was sung then Phil Miller had a short message about “walking in sync” with the Lord. His inspiration came from watching the trailblazers walking the path to or from their camp. A song was led by one of the campers, then there was a special song by some of the chiefs and two wives. After which liberty was given for closing prayer. It is truly an unforgettable experience to attend “church” at Sleepy Creek Boys Camp!
